At the heart of Bloomfield, NJ, the Church on the Green Food Pantry stands as a beacon of hope and sustenance for hundreds of families each week. Under the compassionate leadership of co-managers Kathryn Reilly and Celine Kowbel, this pantry has transformed into more than just a food distribution center—it’s become a community lifeline.
“We believe everyone deserves access to fresh, nutritious food,” shares Kathryn. “When families visit us, they’re not just receiving groceries; they’re receiving the building blocks for healthy meals.”
Every week, the pantry serves over 300 families, supporting approximately 750 adults and 450 children—translating to an impressive 12,700 individuals annually. Unlike traditional food distribution models, Bloomfield Church on the Green offers a diverse selection, including non-perishable staples, fresh produce, dairy products, and frozen meats.
“The smiles we see when people discover fresh vegetables make all the hard work worthwhile,” Celine explains. “One mother told me her children were so excited to have fresh fruit in their lunches again. Those moments remind us why we do this.” In addition, she’s thoughtfully built a play area where children can enjoy themselves while their parents shop, making the experience even more enjoyable for everyone.
A Community Effort
The pantry’s success relies on strategic partnerships and dedicated volunteers. Working closely with MEND and the Bloomfield Community Garden, they ensure a steady supply of fresh, nutritious options for their clients.
“Our volunteers are the backbone of everything we do,” Kathryn emphasizes. “They dedicate nearly 100 hours weekly to sorting donations, stocking shelves, and creating a welcoming environment for everyone who walks through our doors.”
Among these volunteers, Pat and Ezekiel stand out for their exceptional commitment. Pat keeps spirits high with her infectious laughter and warm welcome, while Ezekiel ensures transportation isn’t a barrier for volunteers by providing rides to and from the pantry. He also helps patrons by translating and providing assistance in both languages, ensuring clear communication and a smooth experience for all.
“We’re like a family here,” says another volunteer, Joel. “When you volunteer at the pantry, you’re not just serving food—you’re serving hope and dignity.”
Looking Forward
As food insecurity continues to affect many families in the area, the team at Bloomfield Church on the Green remains committed to expanding their reach and enhancing their services.
“We couldn’t do this without MEND’s support and the generosity of our community partners,” Kathryn acknowledges. “Together, we’re not just feeding people—we’re nourishing our community in body and spirit.”
For the hundreds of families who rely on the Bloomfield Church on the Green Food Pantry each week, Kathryn, Celine, Pat, Ezekiel, and their team of volunteers represent more than just food security—they embody the power of community care and the difference it makes when neighbors help neighbors.
