The Leaguers, Inc.: Empowering Families, Nourishing Futures

At 731 Clinton Avenue in Newark, The Leaguers, Inc. stands as a vital support system for families across diverse communities. Under the leadership of site supervisor Aglaia Fouche, The Leaguers is more than a Head Start center—it’s a lifeline offering early childhood education, nutritional and health services, pregnancy support, and holistic family resources. Serving African American, Caribbean (especially Haitian), Hispanic, and African families, The Leaguers ensures every parent and child feels seen and supported, with multilingual resources and culturally responsive care.

A cornerstone of their programming is the Early Head Start and Head Start services, nurturing children from birth to age five with quality education and nutrition. The Leaguers also supports expectant mothers by helping them connect with doulas, midwives, and hospitals, while celebrating milestones along the way with baby showers and photoshoots. Mental health support and community partnerships further deepen their impact.

Through a dynamic partnership with MEND, The Leaguers brings fresh produce and new foods to families who may otherwise go without. Aglaia and her team use food distribution days as teachable moments, introducing fruits and vegetables that reflect the community’s cultural preferences. The excitement is palpable—families line up eagerly, children clutching bags, curious to discover fresh and healthy foods.

For many, these food programs mean more than a meal—they are a source of dignity, education, and hope. As Aglaia shares, “For that family that comes and gets that bag of food, it’s a world of difference.” The Leaguers continue to empower families, nourish futures, and show that when a community comes together, every child can thrive.
